How well do solar garden lights work in winter or cold weather?

Outdoor solar garden lights generally perform better in summer compared to winter. The influencing factors include:

1. Cold Weather and Temperature Impact on Battery Life:

• In winter, the cold weather can significantly affect the battery’s performance. If the temperature in your area drops below -10°C, the battery’s efficiency may reduce to less than 30% of its summer performance. Below -20°C, the battery might not function at all. At temperatures above -10°C, it may retain 40-60% of its efficiency.

2. Reduced Daylight Hours and Sun Angle:

• A more significant factor is the reduced daylight hours and the lower sun angle in winter. These conditions lead to less solar energy being converted and stored, directly impacting the available energy for the lights.

3. Battery Lifespan:

• All batteries have a designed lifespan, and their storage capacity diminishes over time. Additionally, extremely low temperatures can accelerate this degradation. Studies indicate that low temperatures have a pronounced impact on battery life, particularly on lithium-ion batteries. The primary effects include:

*Capacity Reduction:

• Low temperatures lead to a significant decrease in battery capacity. This is due to increased electrolyte viscosity, which hinders ion movement and raises internal resistance. Consequently, the battery cannot release its full stored energy in low temperatures.

*Slower Electrochemical Reactions:

• The rate of electrochemical reactions within the battery slows down in low temperatures, adversely affecting charging and discharging efficiency. This results in reduced energy output and input in cold conditions.

*Charging Challenges:

• Charging lithium-ion batteries in low temperatures is particularly challenging. It can cause lithium metal to deposit on the electrode surfaces, forming lithium dendrites. This not only reduces battery capacity but also poses risks of short circuits, potentially leading to battery damage or safety incidents.

*Permanent Damage:

• Repeated use of batteries in low-temperature environments, especially charging in such conditions, can cause permanent damage, shortening battery life. Low temperatures induce mechanical stress in battery materials, potentially altering the physical structure of the electrodes and damaging the overall battery structure.

* Increased Self-Discharge Rate:

• Although self-discharge is typically more significant at high temperatures, extremely low temperatures can also increase the self-discharge rate, leading to faster energy loss during storage.

Overall, solar lights perform well in cold weather, but these factors must be considered to maintain optimal functionality.
